Weight Watchers string cheese is my go to brand when I buy cheese sticks for me or the kids. So when I was approached to sample and review their new spreadable cheese wedges, I thought I’d give them a try.
Taste
When it comes to cheese I like the real thing - Norwegian Blue, Drunken Goat from Spain and a nice Wensleydale with dried cranberries being my current favorites. Cheese spread wedges are nice for parties or snacking, but not something I keep in the house even though I grew up eating Laughing Cow.
Taste wise the Weight Watchers Spreadable Wedges are pretty good. My favorite is the original Swiss, though the garlic & herb, jalapeno pepper, and Parmesan peppercorn are all tasty in their own way. Parmesan peppercorn would be good on a piece of French bread as a side for an Italian dish. Also, slices of the jalapeno pepper could be used instead in a taco instead of Jack cheese.
My favorite way to eat them is to spread a wedge on a whole wheat wrap and then fill the wrap with raw spinach leaves. I liked how each wedge was a perfect portion size (1 Weight Watcher POINT) to add a little “cheesy goodness” to my spinach wrap sandwich. The spreads were also good with apple slices and crackers.
Ingredients
On each package, right under the flavor on each of the cheeses, it reads “pasteurized process cheese product.” Basically, Weight Watchers spreadable wedges are a cheese-like food and not the real deal. (On the other hand, Weight Watchers string cheese contains pasteurized part-skim milk, cheese culture, salt, enzymes, and vitamin A palmitate. It’s a real cheese, which is why I like it.)
For example, the Parmesan peppercorn contains cultured milk, water, nonfat milk, Maltodextrin, milk protein concentrate, oat fiber, salt, sodium phosphate, cream, sodium polyphosphate, black pepper, calcium propionate (preservative), sugar, glutamic acid and enzymes. Now compare this to Laughing Cow Light Swiss, which is a "light pasteurized cheese" - light cheddar, cheddar, Swiss and semisoft cheeses (cultured milk and skim milk, salt, whey, enzymes), whey, cream, sodium phosphate, sodium citrate, salt.
